1909: Celebration of the National Women’s Day in the USA

Following the declaration of the United States Socialist Party in support of the 1908 strike, textile workers protested against poor working conditions and on February 28 the first National Women’s Day was held nationwide. Until 1913, the “National Day” was celebrated, the last Sunday of each month of February.

1910: Proclamation of the International Day of Working Women
In 1910, the Second International Conference of Socialist Women in Copenhagen met on a proposal by Clara Zetkin, was proclaimed without a specific date, the celebration of the International Day of Working Women.

1911: The first celebration of International Working Women’s Day and the fires of the Triangle Shirtwaist t-shirt factory in New York.The first Celebration of the history of Women’s Day has been called: the International Day of Working Women. It took place on 19 March 1911 in Germany, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland.

Shortly thereafter, on March 25, a fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist shirts factory in New York. The tragic fire killed 146 workers, mostly Italian and Jewish immigrants, due to poor security conditions.

1917: International Women’s Day in the Soviet Union
The 8th of March (Gregorian calendar) and 23rd of February (Julian calendar) of 1917 was also an important day in the history of women’s rights. After the October revolution, four days later the Tsar was forced to abdicate the provisional government and granted women the right to vote. And for the first time in history, divorce and legal abortion have been approved and said March 8 is considered an official holiday in the Soviet Union.
